Chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition where the kidneys lose the ability to filter blood, causing a
reduction in functionality. This paper reviews causes, symptoms, relevant lab values, progression, and treatment including MNT and potential MNT. Additionally, a case study provides application of MNT principles.

Gaucher disease

Gaucher disease is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the GBA1 gene and is the most common lysosomal storage disorder. This paper reviews genetic polymorphisms, affected systems, treatments, nutrition considerations, and future therapies.

Examining the ability of diosgenin to induce browning in white adipose tissue to increase weight loss

This grant proposal is a group project under the hypothesis of examining the ability of diosgenin to induce browning of white adipose tissue in vivo and to clarify the mechanism in vitro. The proposal explores the hypothesis through specific aims, background and significance, a literature review, research design and methods, preliminary data, and expected results. The PowerPoint summarizes the aims, methods, and preliminary data.

This group PowerPoint provides an educational tool for parents or guardians to manage the disorder through nutritional interventions such as reading labels, foods to avoid, and creating snacks and meals.

Solving inadequate information for women in rural Guatemala leading to child malnutrition

Guatemala has the highest rate of child malnutrition in Latin America, resulting in high rates of stunting in children under 5 years of age. This paper explores causes, outcomes, current programs, and policy alternatives that will improve inadequate information surrounding maternal vocational skills and maternal feeding practices, mainly in rural Guatemala.

Analyzing the Bobcat Bounty food locker program at Texas State

This group project explores the food locker program that operates at LBJ Student Center at Texas State University. The pilot provided meals at no cost that could be picked up at a food locker to students currently participating in the Bobcat Bounty on-campus food pantry.

The Effect of Ultra-Processed Foods on the Human Microbiome

This literature review was a group project that explored primary research focused on ultra-processed foods and its effect on gut microbiota and irritable bowel diseases such as Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis. The review evaluated each study's design, methods, interventions, measurements, outcomes, and findings as well as strengths and limitations to develop a conclusion on the research.
